La Guarimba is a film festival and a cultural organisation situated in the southern Italian region of Calabria with the aim of bringing the cinema back to the people and the people back to the cinema. La Guarimba work with cinema and illustration using culture as a vehicle to promote our values of participatory democracy, integration, human rights, and accessibility.
ARTISTS FOR LA GUARIMBA – AN ILLUSTRATION EXHIBITION
Like the monkeys in the jungle jumping from branch to branch, La Guarimba monkey jumps from hand to hand, flying between the lines and being interpreted by illustrators around the world. In its journey, our monkey learns languages and comes back every august to its home in southern Italy.
For the ninth year, La Guarimba have invited fifteen illustrators from around the world to make their own version of the festival poster in their own style. In this way, we have collected fifteen different versions of La Guarimba monkey, enriching our catalogue of internationally renowned illustrators. The posters were exhibited throughout the festival period in rigid panels, creating a small open-air museum.
Below is my poster proposition of the Guarimba-monkey, it was also a requirement to use a monkey as key element + the slogan "bring people back to the cinema and the cinema to the people" was to be translated in our own native language, which in my case is Mauritian Creole.
The artwork itself visually deals with a more vintage aspect of cinema and filmmaking combined with a good dose of my signature mechanical/ isometric drawing. Everything is hand-drawn the old school way and digitally colored.
